Spanish Immersion Classes

The goal of our Spanish Immersion program at Luna y Cielo is to center Latino/x children and advance the oral, reading and compositional (written) fluency of Spanish language learners through 3 learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Learners will be immersed in phonemic and phonological awareness, the foundational pieces to advance fluency, which includes vowel sounds and letter sounds, letter names, connecting letter sounds across languages, and syllabification. Language fluency and overall comprehension of the language will also be achieved through the exploration of different cultural themes from our Risas y Sonrisas Curriculum along with additional short stories, traditional songs, rhymes, and poems.

Risas y Sonrisas, an award-winning curriculum, was developed by a native Spanish speaker, and it gives proper attention to Spanish reading skills, correct pronunciation, and practical conversation.

In the first language learning unit, students learn correct Spanish pronunciation. After that, each vocabulary unit introduces a set of new Spanish words with a song, reinforces those words with games and activities, and closes with a set of Q&A that gives the new Spanish vocabulary context and meaning.

Throughout the program, we will employ the power of positive thinking:  affirming students’ great capacity to acquire language and present information to them in such a way that they develop self confidence and positive outlook for learning Spanish and celebrating their strong cultural identity beyond Luna y Cielo.

Children will also be using a workbook during class and may even have some practice for home.

FAQs

  • Children will be exposed to phonemic and phonological concepts from the Estrellita Curriculum, which includes vowel and letter sounds, letter names, connecting letter sounds across languages, and syllabification as well as exploration of different cultural themes from our Risas y Sonrisas Curriculum, short stories, traditional songs, rhymes, and poems in small and large group classroom setting.

  • Even if a child already “knows” or has been exposed to the Spanish language they are not yet masters of the language. To strive for mastery of the Spanish language children need to be given the opportunity to learn letter sounds, form syllables, arrange words in sentences and also be presented with different activities to expand their vocabulary, strengthen their comprehension skills, and celebrate the culture in which the language is rooted.

  • Children need to bring their workbooks and a composition notebook and a pencil for every class. No spiral notebooks please. Workbooks are included in the registration fee.

  • The curriculum that we use focuses on correct pronunciation, reading skills, vocabulary, and practical Spanish conversation. In the first language learning unit, students learn correct Spanish pronunciation. After that, each vocabulary unit introduces a set of new Spanish words with a song, reinforces those words with games and activities, and closes with a set of Q&A that gives the new Spanish vocabulary context and meaning.

Simple grammar concepts like masculine/feminine nouns, personal pronouns, and verb conjugation are introduced gradually and in an easy-to-understand way. As they move through the course, students learn to build picture sentences in the past, present, and future tenses.

  • We chose a unique and truly complete elementary Spanish curriculum. Developed by a native Spanish speaker, it gives proper attention to Spanish reading skills, correct pronunciation, and practical conversation.

    It’s an award-winning curriculum:

Taps into students’ natural language-learning ability to teach them real-world Spanish skills rather than just scattered vocabulary words.

It is full of original songs, illustrations, games, skits, and activities that keep students engaged.

Reaches students in their preferred learning style (auditory, visual, kinesthetic) to make learning Spanish fun for everyone.

Gets kids moving and engaged! Encourages students to actively participate and use their imagination and creativity.

  • The registration fee includes the workbook for the life of the program.
